Enterprises across industry verticals are looking for new ways to increase the efficacy of their businesses. One way to do this is building an efficient pipeline of processes, employees, devices, and services that are all tightly integrated to get the best return on investment. However, this requires an efficient telecommunication system where industry machines, personnel, and business services use continuous, performant, and reliable communications to work together.
Private mobile networks (PMN) are the answer to this problem. They have become increasingly popular across industries, thanks to their many benefits, including system ownership, data privacy, increased security, and high quality wireless communications (most notably for mission-critical private 5G networks in Industry 4.0 use cases).Â
At this year’s Mobile Wireless Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona, Canonical will demonstrate a cloud-native 5G private mobile network (PMN) running on Canonical Kubernetes, as a cost-efficient and automated software stack consisting of open source software components. Charmed Aether SD-Core – Canonical’s open source product – currently in beta release – will run as an automated 5G core network on Canonical Kubernetes 1.32 LTS, deployed via Terraform and consuming enhanced platform features (EPA) on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. It will enable multiple system demonstrations at Canonical’s booth, providing edge computing AI/ML services with 5G connectivity provided to devices.
Come and see our demos at Booth 2A90, Hall 2.
Demos
At Booth 2A90, Hall 2, Canonical will have three demos where edge computing services are connected to devices via 5G, showcasing how an enterprise can operate their own 5G PMN using common off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. The 5G PMN will be deployed on the modular hardware platform Dell PowerEdge XR8000 running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on Intel Xeon scalable processors. The edge computing services will be delivered by AI/ML applications, for use cases including workplace safety, object detection, and employee/customer assistance.
At the booth, the Canonical team will explain how open source Charmed Aether SD-Core integrates with open source virtual Open RAN software from OpenAirInterface (OAI), automated as Charmed OAI RAN, and off-the-shelf commercial 5G indoor SmartPod from our partner CableFree. Charmed Aether SD-Core will be deployed on Canonical Kubernetes 1.32 LTS and Ubuntu via Terraform. This will form an end-to-end (E2E) 5G mobile network stack running as a collection of telco CNFs that is easily deployable and self-healing, thanks to Canonical’s Juju software orchestration engine. With the complete stack virtualized and running as automated software components, enterprises can benefit from significant CAPEX and OPEX savings, thanks to open source on COTS hardware and full automation in software lifecycle management.
We look forward to connecting with you
Canonical’s MWC 2025 demos are examples of many scenarios where an open software stack on cutting-edge hardware can deliver effective private mobile network deployments. We are excited to connect with you at our booth at the biggest telecom event of 2025, and to explain more about Charmed Aether SD-Core, Canonical Kubernetes, Ubuntu, and our strong partnerships with industry leader providers of COTS hardware and silicon.
Stop by at Booth 2A90, Hall 2 to experience open source cloud-native infrastructure for 5G private mobile and to talk to us about how Canonical can help you build cost-effective software infrastructure for your private mobile network deployments.
