NGMN Unveils Framework to Propel Telecom to 6G Era

The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) has introduced a comprehensive framework guiding the evolution towards 6G networks and beyond. Building on a 2023 statement, their latest document emphasizes addressing current 5G limitations, accommodating new demands, and integrating forthcoming technological trends. A smooth transition is essential, ensuring standardization facilitates wide-ranging industry cooperation.

Arash Ashouriha, chairman of the NGMN board, highlighted that “NGMN envisions the future network as a service-based platform that evolves to efficiently meet the growing demands of users, applications, and industries.” This statement underscores the importance of early architectural planning to simplify complexity and promote collaboration.

Autonomous network management and AI-native design are core elements of NGMN’s vision. These will drive significant changes in network architecture. Current 5G challenges include network complexity, legacy system integration, and energy inefficiency that 6G must solve.

Thirteen key principles guide the evolution to 6G. Firstly, the new architecture should enable continuous innovation with on-demand deployment. It must also ensure compatibility with existing core connectivity services. Security enhancements through quantum-safe infrastructure are vital. The new networks should improve spectrum efficiency and surpass 5G-Advanced capabilities.

Mobile operators stress the necessity for a new 6G air interface. This should enhance integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), provide dense low-cost device connectivity, and improve overall performance.

Following the publication, NGMN will continue spearheading discussions on crucial network evolution aspects. Planned initiatives will explore migration strategies, seamless coexistence with 5G networks, and new capabilities vital for 6G adoption.

Laurent Leboucher, an NGMN board member, stated, “The future of mobile networks lies in their ability to evolve continuously, much like software, to meet the changing needs of users and industries.” This aligns with NGMN’s commitment since its founding in 2006 to support 5G full implementation and green future networks.
