Rakuten Mobile and Fujitsu Revolutionize 5G Network in Japan

Rakuten Mobile has announced a significant collaboration with Fujitsu to enhance the rollout of its 5G network in Japan. The carrier plans to introduce base stations equipped with energy-efficient radio units (RUs) developed by Fujitsu, using the 44R21 model. This initiative aims to swiftly expand 5G Sub6 network coverage within the region.

Fujitsu’s 44R21 RU model is recognized for its compliance with O-RAN specifications, established by the O-RAN Alliance. This compatibility ensures efficient communication between base station components via a fronthaul interface. Additionally, it is designed to be compact and lightweight, minimizing the physical and financial footprint of network infrastructure. These features make network deployments more cost-effective and accelerates operational readiness.

Showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the base model underscores the technological advances Fujitsu and Rakuten Mobile aim to bring to the industry. Leveraging virtualization network technology, the companies plan to capitalize on existing infrastructure to further reduce lead times from construction to operation.

Beyond national goals, Rakuten Symphony and Fujitsu are working together to discuss international collaborations. They aim to promote global adoption of Open RAN technology, leveraging these new RUs. Open RAN is increasingly seen as a flexible and cost-efficient alternative to traditional network models, encouraging global shifts toward this open standard.

Both companies are optimistic about the partnership’s impact on the future of mobile services. Sharad Sriwastawa, Co-CEO and CTO of Rakuten Mobile, expressed enthusiasm for expanding their high-performance, energy-efficient base station capabilities. Fujitsu’s Corporate Executive Officer, Masaaki Moribayashi, emphasized the innovation of their radio platform and its potential to enhance Rakuten Mobile’s network flexibility and efficiency.
