AT&T and AST SpaceMobile Launch Direct-to-Cell Satellite Trials


The Federal Communications Commission has greenlit AT&T and AST SpaceMobile to conduct trials of direct-to-cell satellite connectivity. This initiative aims to bolster public safety communications over FirstNet by utilizing spectrum designated for this purpose. The primary focus is on Band 14, the allocated frequency for FirstNet, accessed through low Earth orbit satellites from AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird constellation.

The testing marks a significant stride in extending FirstNet capabilities beyond traditional ground-based infrastructure. AT&T, managing FirstNet, partners with AST SpaceMobile to explore supplemental satellite communications. These efforts seek to enhance connectivity in areas that are rural, remote, or disaster-affected, ensuring consistent service regardless of existing infrastructure conditions.

This year, designated first responders using FirstNet will assess satellite-powered public safety connectivity. The objective is to maintain reliable contact even in regions lacking cell tower coverage. Matt Walsh of AT&T emphasized that “Satellite connectivity on FirstNet is being built with public safety’s unique needs in mind,” highlighting the emphasis on providing robust support to first responders.

This project builds on AT&T’s established satellite initiatives for public safety. FirstNet has over 180 deployable network assets that can be dispatched swiftly, proving vital during emergencies. These assets include Satellite Cell on Light Trucks, offering temporary network access during natural calamities.

Furthermore, FirstNet empowers agencies to manage their mobile cell sites, with over 500 such assets already in operation. Users can also leverage satellite-fueled peer-to-peer messaging and emergency connectivity, essential in areas with limited cellular service.

The trials with AST SpaceMobile aim to offer seamless satellite-to-cell services mimicking regular mobile connections. The aim is a straightforward connection between standard smartphones and satellites, eliminating the need for special equipment.

Meanwhile, other U.S. carriers are advancing in direct-to-cell technology. T-Mobile collaborates with SpaceX to develop services using Starlink satellites, starting with text messaging. Verizon is exploring enterprise satellite services with Amazon’s Project Kuiper but hasn’t announced a consumer-grade service.

These developments underscore the telecom industry’s directive towards satellite solutions for closing coverage gaps, especially in underserved territories. In 2023, AST SpaceMobile and AT&T demonstrated the viability of satellite-to-mobile calls without specialized hardware, setting the stage for current trials.
