AT&T Tops Network Tests, Verizon Leads in 5G Performance

AT&T has emerged as the leader in RootMetrics’ second-half 2024 network testing, claiming the top spot at both national and state levels for overall network performance. However, when examining 5G capabilities specifically, Verizon and T-Mobile US surpassed AT&T.

Conducted by RootMetrics, a part of Ookla, the tests involved over 3 million assessments conducted across 125 metro areas, over 6,600 indoor sites, and 247,000 miles of drive-testing. The evaluation considered both combined (4G and 5G) and 5G-only network statistics. AT&T displayed stellar national-level performance in various categories, including network reliability and speed. It tied with Verizon in call and text performance.

RootMetrics’ methodology gave AT&T’s network the top speed accolade due to its consistent minimum performance, despite T-Mobile’s national median download speed of 350.9 Mbps, more than double that of AT&T or Verizon. Notably, T-Mobile posted median download speeds of over 200 Mbps in most cities tested. Yet, Verizon secured the most metro-level awards, followed by AT&T with T-Mobile trailing.

In state-level testing, AT&T stood out with 278 awards, including ties, outpacing Verizon’s 264 and T-Mobile’s modest 73. With a focused 5G network assessment, Verizon excelled in overall experience, speed, and reliability, particularly in rural areas. T-Mobile led in 5G availability with nearly 92%, compared to Verizon’s 64.5%.

Commenting on their performance, Joe Russo, Executive Vice President and President of Global Network and Technology at Verizon, stated, “Our priority is delivering the best, most reliable, secure 5G network experience for our customer. This recognition from RootMetrics reflects our dedication to staying ahead of the curve through technology innovation and ensuring our customers can always count on us.”
