Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Malaysia’s state-run 5G network operator, in partnership with Edotco Group, has completed the deployment of a private 5G network at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This installation, completed in under two months, aims to enhance connectivity for travelers and visitors, showcasing Malaysia’s preparedness as the upcoming ASEAN chair in 2025.
The newly installed 5G in-building solutions (IBS) at the airport provide users with faster and more stable network performance. This installation is a significant step forward, as it not only improves connectivity within public and commercial spaces but also opens doors for businesses to explore innovative 5G applications. DNB’s CEO, Datuk Azman Ismail, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the company’s strategy to improve indoor connectivity in high-traffic areas.
DNB has already implemented 5G in-building solutions at 73 sites, including major airports, hospitals, convention centers, and government facilities. This complements their outdoor 5G infrastructure, which covers over 82% of the populated areas in Malaysia.
Currently, Malaysian operators such as CelcomDigi, Maxis, YTL, and U Mobile, which collectively hold stakes in DNB, have been using the state-run network to deliver 5G services. Recently, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) approved U Mobile to deploy the second 5G network. This cooperation aims to ensure seamless quality 5G service.
In May 2023, authorities announced a shift to the dual-network approach once DNB achieved 80% coverage, a milestone reached by December 2023. As Malaysia continues to expand its 5G infrastructure, these developments herald a new era of connectivity and technological progress.
