M1 Launches Bold 5G RedCap Services for Enterprises

M1 has unveiled its 5G RedCap network services tailored for enterprises, marking a significant milestone as the first launch of such services in Southeast Asia. This move strengthens its position in the dynamic 5G-Advanced landscape by bridging the gap between existing Internet of Things technologies and comprehensive 5G solutions. RedCap, equipped with lower latency and longer battery life, is designed for vital industrial applications.

The new offering fits seamlessly with M1’s current suite of services, including network slicing, speed priority, and carrier aggregation. The commercial launch is supported by Nokia and incorporates Ransnet for rapid device development, ensuring swift uptake among Singapore’s businesses.

According to Andrew Cheng, M1’s chief of enterprise services, the introduction of 5G RedCap is a strategic step. It provides businesses with efficient, reliable, and scalable connected solutions. This development positions M1 at the forefront of next-generation business-focused IoT and industrial connectivity.

Powered by Nokia’s advanced technology, RedCap opens new opportunities by supporting a wider range of devices. Jae Won, head of APAC Mobile Networks at Nokia, remarks, “The introduction of 5G RedCap will unlock new opportunities for many industries, with potentially billions of new devices connected with 5G.”

RedCap represents a leaner version of 5G capabilities introduced with 3GPP Release 17, targeting devices with lower battery needs and costs, and designed for scenarios previously handled by LTE CAT-4. The technology promises performance improvements, offering up to 150 Mbps in potential maximum downlink speeds, while reducing device complexity and costs.

Significant investments in 5G standalone networks are necessary for adopting RedCap. Currently, 154 operators in 63 nations are investing in this technology. However, RedCap itself is in its infancy, with endeavors from 26 operators across 18 countries.
