O2 Telefónica Germany Boosts 5G with AWS Partnership

O2 Telefónica Germany, a leading telecommunications company, has chosen Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its 5G core network capabilities in Germany. This agreement, unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2025, marks an extension of their previous deployment of O2 Telefónica’s 5G standalone (SA) core on AWS infrastructure since July 2024.

Through this partnership, O2 Telefónica plans to integrate the 5G core data plane within its data centers equipped with AWS Outposts racks. These racks provide local cloud infrastructure to handle network-intensive workloads efficiently. Furthermore, the company is set to adopt IMS voice services using AWS Graviton processors.

To ensure seamless network operations, O2 Telefónica will leverage AWS’s comprehensive suite of services, including Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, and Amazon Managed Grafana. These tools will facilitate holistic monitoring and management of the 5G network. Additionally, AWS analytics and machine learning solutions like Amazon Athena and Amazon SageMaker will be employed for data analysis and predictive insights, optimizing network performance.

Mallik Rao, the Chief Technology Officer at O2 Telefónica, stated, “The start of our 5G cloud core marks a decisive step in the transformation of our network architecture. We are proud to have the first fully cloud-native 5G core network deployed on AWS with a million subscribers already being served through it.”

This partnership is a significant leap for the telco industry, as noted by Fabio Cerone, General Manager at AWS Telco Business Unit EMEA: “This multi-year agreement where O2 Telefónica selects AWS as cloud provider for all the network functions across 5G core and IMS voice, marks a pivotal moment in the Telco industry.”
