One NZ’s Satellite TXT Surpasses 2 Million Messages Milestone

One NZ has reached a significant milestone. The telecom giant announced that its customers have sent over 2 million text messages via the innovative Starlink-powered direct-to-cell satellite service. This achievement highlights increased usage, with the service growing rapidly since its launch.

The service, known as Satellite TXT, was first introduced by One NZ late last year, taking the lead before T-Mobile US. Within four months, one million messages were exchanged and by six months, the messaging count doubled. This rapid adoption reflects the efficient design and demand for the service.

An important aspect is that the service was made available to prepaid customers only in April, which likely contributed to the acceleration in usage. Presently, these customers enjoy the service without charge, although a nominal fee of A$5 will apply later.

Sharina Nisha, GM Network Services at One NZ, emphasized the service’s impact, citing, “More than 40 types of smartphones are now enabled to text via space.” Many messages are sent and received within 30 seconds, allowing coverage in even the remotest parts of New Zealand. This is critical for areas where traditional mobile signals fail, ensuring connectivity during emergencies and in blackspots.

Aside from coverage and service advantages, One NZ sees this as a customer acquisition opportunity. They invite users from other providers to test the service for free, boosting their market presence. As the first mover, One NZ must leverage these advantages to remain competitive.

Starlink announced the completion of its first-generation constellation, supporting One NZ’s platform. In emergency scenarios, the safety aspect remains a prominent feature. The service covers New Zealand’s land beyond terrestrial mobile networks, extending even into sea zones.
