Rakuten Symphony and MobiFone Pilot Open RAN in Vietnam

In a significant move for the telecommunications landscape of Southeast Asia, Rakuten Symphony and Vietnam’s MobiFone Corporation have embarked on a pioneering initiative. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding to pilot 4G and 5G Open RAN (O-RAN) networks in Vietnam. This places Vietnam among the first in the region to explore Open RAN technology, setting a precedent for innovative network solutions.

This collaboration is not just a trial of new technology; it propels MobiFone towards its 2030 objective of becoming a preeminent digital corporation in Vietnam. The openness of the Open RAN architecture promises flexibility, improved network performance, and enhanced security. It also aligns with MobiFone’s ambition to achieve greater technological autonomy.

The project will draw from Rakuten Mobile’s valuable insights and experience in Japan. It will leverage outcomes from their partnership with NEDO on post-5G infrastructure, aiming to validate Open RAN’s commercial efficiency in Vietnam. Rakuten Symphony will supply Open RAN equipment, ensuring deployment and technical support in collaboration with ecosystem partners.

However, the introduction of Open RAN technology has its challenges. Ensuring seamless integration with existing network infrastructure and maintaining high quality of service are critical concerns. Yet, with Rakuten Symphony’s innovative approach and MobiFone’s infrastructure readiness, these hurdles could be effectively managed.

Providing a glimpse into the broader impact, Sharad Sriwastawa, President of Rakuten Symphony, mentioned, “Rakuten Symphony is pleased to support MobiFone in deploying one of Southeast Asia’s first commercial Open RAN mobile networks.” Meanwhile, Vinh Tuan Bao, Deputy General Director of MobiFone, highlighted, “5G serves not only as a breakthrough technology, but as a transformative platform for economic and social development.”

As this trial in Vietnam unfolds, it echoes similar ventures elsewhere. Recently, Rakuten Symphony and Zain Kuwait embarked on a trial to establish a cloud-native Open RAN. Such endeavors indicate a growing acceptance of Open RAN’s potential across diverse markets.
