Samsung & KT Unite to Drive 6G Innovations with AI Integration


In a strategic move to shape the future of mobile communications, South Korean tech titans Samsung and KT are collaborating to enhance 6G signal quality. Their partnership will focus on innovating multi-antenna technologies to widen 6G coverage across targeted frequency bands.

An essential component of their research involves integrating AI into telecom systems, which promises to improve network performance and stability. Jong-Sik Lee, Executive VP and Head of the Future Network Laboratory at KT, highlighted the significance of the partnership. He stated, “Through this joint research with Samsung Electronics, we expect to secure next-generation network technologies that differentiate the quality of the user experience. We will further strengthen our efforts in developing core 6G technologies to lead future mobile communication innovations.”

As global discussions on mobile communication standards continue, the collaboration zeros in on eXtreme multiple-input multiple-output (X-MIMO) systems. This technology involves deploying ultra-high-density antennas to boost 6G coverage and enhance data transmission speeds.

At the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023, one significant milestone was identifying the 7 GHz band (7.125–8.4 GHz) as a potential frequency for 6G due to its favorable characteristics. However, utilizing this higher frequency compared to the 3.5 GHz C-band in 5G networks presents challenges, particularly due to greater signal path loss.

To tackle these challenges, Samsung and KT will investigate advanced beamforming technology, which focuses signal transmission in specific directions to reduce interference. They will also explore multi-spatial transmission technology, enabling data delivery to multiple users simultaneously. In X-MIMO systems using the 7 GHz band, the number of required antennas will likely far exceed current 5G deployments, necessitating new system architectures.

Beyond technology, the fusion of telecoms with AI presents transformative potential. Their research aims to harness AI for improving user experiences, especially in areas with poor signal reception. By predicting and addressing disruptions, such as streaming interruptions, AI could ensure a smoother communication experience.

Angelo Jeongho Park, Executive VP and Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, said, “We are committed to developing innovative 6G technologies that enhance both the operational efficiency of the 7GHz band and the overall user experience. Our collaboration with KT will serve as a key foundation for advancing next-generation communications through reasonable, cost-effective investments.”
