Siemens recently showcased its revolutionary steps in industrial technology at Hannover Messe, Germany’s renowned trade fair. The highlight was the introduction of an industrial AI foundation model in partnership with Microsoft. This model utilizes Siemens’ extensive archive of specialized production knowledge to enhance industrial engineering and automation processes. This innovation signifies a major leap for Industry 4.0.
What sets this foundation model apart is its ability to integrate various digital production systems. It collaborates with digital twin software and Industrial Copilot AI tools, including new virtual programmable logic controllers (vPLCs). Already, these virtual controllers have been implemented at an Audi manufacturing facility in Germany. These innovations promise to refine recommendations and improve operational efficiency while mitigating the skilled labor gap.
Roland Busch, Siemens’ President and CEO, optimistically stated, “We have domain knowhow – we understand our industries. And we have the data. Together with AI, this is a winning combination.” Busch encourages a regulatory overhaul in Germany to foster faster innovation and decreased bureaucracy. Siemens perceives this as a unique chance for the nation to rejuvenate growth.
Utilizing industrial AI as the centerpiece of its transformation strategy, Siemens aims to position itself as a unified tech entity. The AI is strategically applied across a substantial product portfolio found within its Xcelerator marketplace. Collaborative ventures with companies like Accenture, AWS, and Nvidia are critical to Siemens’ digital transformation agenda, with a focus on high-growth sectors.
A breakthrough collaboration with Nvidia aims to embed Nvidia’s computing power into Siemens’ Xcelerator products. Together they are enhancing Siemens’ digital twin solutions for improved visualization and simulation capabilities. Additionally, leveraging Nvidia AI for video analytics looks to decrease operational downtime.
Siemens has also inked agreements with AWS and Microsoft Azure to elevate its digital-building platforms. This aims to optimize infrastructure efficiency. Meanwhile, its virtual PLC initiative is earning attention by offering industrial facilities the adaptability to rapidly respond to market changes. For example, multiple Audi locations will soon introduce virtual PLC technology.
