Telenor Lands Military Comms Deal with Sweden and Finland

Telenor, Norway’s leading telecom company, has entered a decade-long agreement to provide advanced communication solutions to the Swedish and Finnish militaries through its subsidiary KNL. The deal, which starts in 2025 and runs through 2035, is part of a broader defense cooperation effort under NORDEFCO—an initiative gaining traction after Sweden and Finland joined NATO.

KNL’s technology offers high-frequency communication systems that function without relying on satellites, GPS, or existing infrastructure. This makes the system particularly valuable for military operations that face hostile environments, including electronic interference or infrastructure loss. According to Telenor, the portability and resilience of the solution make it ideal for critical missions.

While financial specifics remain undisclosed, the company sees this as a strategic move to deepen its role in the defense sector amid growing cyber threats and rising geopolitical instability. The agreement is expected to bolster cooperation between Nordic countries and support efforts to standardize military equipment and technology across their armed forces.

Telenor believes this partnership will open doors for KNL to expand its footprint, especially if other Nordic nations adopt the same solutions. The company also revealed ongoing discussions with multiple NATO countries, suggesting further international growth opportunities.

Dan Ouchterlony, head of Telenor Amp, noted that since acquiring KNL five years ago, the company has pivoted to focus entirely on defense. He described KNL’s innovations as transformative for modern military needs.

KNL CEO Toni Lindén emphasized the global relevance of their technology, highlighting its proven reliability under extreme conditions. He sees this agreement as a stepping stone toward broader market expansion and increased international recognition, especially as global security dynamics shift and demand for robust defense communication solutions rises.
