Vodafone has solidified its commitment to the UK’s smart metering initiative by enhancing its role in the national infrastructure transformation. Teaming up with the Data Communications Company (DCC), the telecom giant is set to bolster the nation’s energy landscape. Previously, Vodafone provided 2G and 4G mobile connectivity for smart meter data transmission to a central system. Now, the company will extend its services by supplying fixed connectivity that links energy providers directly to the Data Service Platform (DSP).
This DSP, managed by DCC, serves as the core intelligence behind the smart metering system. It collects and processes data from individual meters, allowing energy companies to access necessary information efficiently. In a significant development, Nick Gliddon, CEO of Vodafone Business UK, shared, “Smart meters are central to Britain’s journey toward a more sustainable, efficient energy system — and the Data Service Platform is the intelligence behind it all.”
Deployment of fixed connectivity elevates Vodafone’s contributions by ensuring secure, reliable data flow between energy suppliers and the DSP. This step aligns with efforts to transition to a smarter, greener energy system. DCC’s CEO, Chris Lovatt emphasized, “Smart metering is central to Britain’s energy transition to net zero and the DSP is fundamental to the smart system.”
The collaboration also involves IBM, developing a cloud-based DSP platform, and CGI, the system integrator and current DSP provider. Together, these organizations aim to enhance the smart metering program by emphasizing scalability, security, and sustainability throughout the upgrade.
By modernizing energy data infrastructure, Vodafone and its partners propel the UK closer to its net-zero targets. This initiative highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in leading the country towards a more energy-efficient future.
