Vodafone Idea is making significant strides by deploying its 5G network in 23 additional Indian cities. This expansion includes key cities such as Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Pune, and Trivandrum. This move builds on previous launches in Mumbai and Delhi, aiming to enhance digital connectivity across the country.
The rollout is strategic and phased, leveraging AI-powered Self-Organising Networks (SON) to manage the network infrastructure. This approach optimizes network performance, reduces deployment costs, and increases efficiency. By collaborating with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung, the company ensures robust and reliable network coverage.
While advancing its 5G efforts, Vodafone Idea continues to bolster its 4G network simultaneously. This dual approach has increased the overall capacity and speed of its 4G network, expanding its reach to 84% of India’s population, up from 77% the previous year. The enhanced 4G capacity complements the 5G rollout, offering improved service continuity.
Chief Technology Officer Jagbir Singh highlighted the strategic value of deploying 5G behind competitors like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. The delayed launch enabled Vodafone Idea to adopt newer technologies, such as Disaggregated Radio Access Network (RAN) systems, enhancing operational efficacy and reducing costs.
An interesting development is the Government of India’s increasing stake in the company, which now stands at 48.99% following recent equity allotments worth INR369.5 billion (approximately $4.3 billion). This followed a government order converting outstanding spectrum auction dues into equity.
The financial backing strengthens Vodafone Idea’s position in the competitive telecom landscape. The carrier has inked $3.6 billion worth of network equipment deals with its partners over the coming three years.
